Academic Programme

The mission of HCIS is to nurture students into independent, innovative and internationalised global citizens. To facilitate the development of our students, HCIS creates multiple learning platforms across a wide array of programmes in the following domains: academic, values and lifestyle.

Students in Secondary 1 and 2 are offered a broad and general curriculum. The emphasis during the first two years is to inculcate good study habits in the students as well as joy in schooling and learning. In these foundation years, students study core subjects vital for forming their knowledge base. Alongside the development of content knowledge and skills, enrichment courses such as Calligraphy and Weiqi are also infused into the normal curriculum to enhance students’ thinking skills and cultural appreciation.

Students in Secondary 3 and 4 are given wide exposure and training in different subjects as preparation for higher studies and continuation into the IB Diploma Programme. Besides the Languages, Mathematics and Pure Sciences, students in Secondary 3 have the option of taking up Economics, Business Studies and Art as an elective. Emphasis from Secondary 3 and beyond is given to knowledge application and construction, independent research, analysis and academic paper writing skills.      

HCIS adopts a learner-centric approach where students are given diverse opportunities to take charge of their own learning and development. To make this possible, students are encouraged to participate in various school-based programmes and external events or international competitions. The school’s Talent InnoFest, discussion forums with industry players, overseas expeditions and participation in national and international Model UN Conferences such as THIMUN, are some examples. In all these, multiple learning concepts and methodologies are weaved into the students’ total learning experience -- problem-based learning (PBL), constructivist lesson plans, case studies and experiential activities, to name a few. In this eclectic model, a stimulating and rich schooling experience is the order of the day.
