MY FIRST LEARNING JOURNEY TO SOME FOOD FACTORIES IN SINGAPORE
16th January 2012 was not just another routine school day, but it was my first learning journey to some food factories in Singapore. Our form teachers had organised this learning journey for me and my classmates, to learn more about the famous food factories in Singapore.
At around nine o’clock, we left our classroom with our school bags and waited for our bus outside the school office. The bus soon arrived in 10 minutes and we were on our way to the first food factory; which was the ‘Otah’ factory. As we got down from the bus and walked into the factory, we were struck by awe just looking at the speed of the workers making the ‘Otah’. The owner of the said factory, who was very passionate about his work, introduced in detail the process of ‘Otah’ making. Most of his introduction was done in Mandarin with a touch of the English language, here and there. As he was talking, my friends and I took down some notes and also some photographs. We saw how the ‘Otah’ was made and we were also given some to taste. At the first bite, I felt that it was a little spicy but eventually, I got used to the taste. Soon after, I saw some of my friends making their way to buy the ‘Otahs’.
Next, we were taken to the ‘Soon Kueh’ factory. This factory specialises in making these ‘Soon Kuehs’ with both turnips and fried shrimps as fillings or turnips and Gu-Cai as another option. It was interesting to note that the ‘Soon Kueh’ is a very famous delicacy in Singapore as well as in Malaysia. We were told to try out this delicacy but most of us, if not all, were taken aback with the size of the dumpling.
The third factory that we were taken to for this learning journey was the ‘Chee Cheong Fun’ factory. This dish, which originates from Southern China and Hong Kong is popularly served as one of the delicacy with ‘Dim Sum’. I like that we can have variety with this dish, depending on how we want it to be served to us; with beef, pork or vegetables.
After lunch in Bedok Point, we left for our last learning journey which was to the “Dairy Park’. We walked up the small hill leading to a very beautiful large lake. We relaxed, rested and took photographs of the beautiful view in front of us.
Twenty minutes later, we left the Park for the bus. By the time we touched base in Hwa Chong, it was almost four o’clock. By the looks on my friends’ faces, it was enough to let everyone know that we enjoyed this learning journey. It was tiring but worth the trip.
