Anglo-Chinese Model United Nations Conference (6-8 June 2011)
Exposing our students to a variety of activities and programme outside the mainstream curriculum training is part of HCIS' endeavour to develop our students to be independent, innovative and adopt a more international outlook.
In June this year, the Faculty of the Humanities sent five delegations to the inaugural Anglo-Chinese Model United Nations Conference (ACMUN). The conference which took place from 6-8 June drew in participants from schools throughout Singapore, including junior colleges.
A few members of the HCIS delegation share with us their thoughts on the conference.
"Joining ACJC's first Model United Nations this year has definitely been an exhilarating experience. On top of learning many new skills like debating, I made many new friends that I would never forget. Though the road to the ACMUN may not have been the smoothest of roads, with countless hours being put into preparation, the process was, in retrospect, nothing that I would regret. To be honest, I was not expecting such a enjoyable experience at ACMUN; it was certainly worth all the hard work.
The ECOSOC Council was by far the best council! I enjoyed myself thoroughly, especially after being well prepared by our dedicated teachers Mr. Guan Yong Jie, Mr. Im Zhen Jie and Mr. Samuel Lim. There were many memorable moments shared over the two days and I feel that it was worth all the hard work that was put in!"

"The months of preparation for the conference were honestly grueling; yet they did pay off at the conference, as all of us more than held our own against other delegates who were older and more experienced. A memorable aspect of the ECOSOC was some of the speeches made, which featured hilariously absurd metaphors. The HCIS delegation was muted in the first day although we did come to our own on the second day of the conference! Nadia and Wen Qian were courageous in the ECOSOC council, asking piercing questions of the delegates representing China and US, dominant parties in the committee, and defending their own positions with biting and witty comebacks."

"ACMUN has definitely been a great experience for all of us. Despite the extensive preparations, last minute topic changes and changes in delegation personnel, everything came together in the end and we really enjoyed the conference. It has been a personal honour for me to be the head of our delegation for ACMUN and I appreciate the time , effort and cooperation the delegates have put in.
The two days at ACJC was a memorable one. The process of crafting our position papers was not easy but we did it with the help of Mr. Samuel Lim, Head of the Humanities Faculty, and of course Mr. Guan and Mr. Im. Model United Nations seemed daunting at first but in the end it proved to be worth all the difficulties, as we learnt about countries we didn't know existed, grew closer as a group, and made new friends at the conference."
