Singapore Junior Physics Olympiads (4 Aug 11)
A total of 18 Secondary Four students participated in the Singapore Junior Physics Olympiads (SJPO) held on 4 August 2011. The SJPO is an annual competition organized by the Institute of Physics Singapore to encourage the study and appreciation of Physics among secondary school students. In addition, it is also a competition to highlight Physics talents and identify students for early training for the IPhO (International Physics Olympiad).
Taking part in any Olympiad is no mean feat, and a Physics Olympiad is no different. It involves extensive training and conditioning of the mind, and that’s exactly what we did.
Over the course of five months, we attended weekly lessons at the lecture theatres of National University of Singapore (NUS), where physics professors taught physics skills and terminologies that are way beyond our current level. We managed to pull through in one piece through the comprehensive teachings of the lecturers, together with the sheer devotion of our very own physics teacher Ms. Angelin Wong.
Overall, it was an enriching experience that involved a lot of hard work, but hard earned prizes are the sweetest. We have developed a more thorough understanding of advance physics concepts, giving us an edge over our peers who missed the chance to participate.
I hope the school will give us the green light to take part in such programmes more often, so that we can learn more while doing the school proud.
